CBSE Class 10 uses a 9-point grading scale (A1 to E2). Each grade corresponds to a marks range and grade point value used in the CGPA calculation.
| Grade | Grade Points | Marks Range | Example CGPA (5 A1s) | % (×9.5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 10 | 91–100 | 10.0 | 95% |
| A2 | 9 | 81–90 | 9.0 | 85.5% |
| B1 | 8 | 71–80 | 8.0 | 76% |
| B2 | 7 | 61–70 | 7.0 | 66.5% |
| C1 | 6 | 51–60 | 6.0 | 57% |
| C2 | 5 | 41–50 | 5.0 | 47.5% |
| D1 | 4 | 33–40 | 4.0 | 38% |
Step 1 – Subject Grade Points: Each subject gets a grade (A1, A2, B1…) based on the marks range. Each grade has a fixed grade point value (A1=10, A2=9, etc.).
Step 2 – Best 5 Main Subjects: CGPA is calculated from the grade points of the 5 best-performing main subjects. If a student takes a 6th additional subject (e.g., Computer Science as an optional language subject), its grade point is included only if it improves the CGPA.
Step 3 – Average: CGPA = (Sum of 5 best main subject grade points) ÷ 5
Step 4 – Percentage: Percentage Equivalent = CGPA × 9.5

Unlike Class 10, CBSE Class 12 does not use a CGPA system — it reports actual marks obtained and calculates percentage directly from total marks in all subjects.
Formula: Percentage = (Sum of Marks in All Subjects) ÷ (Sum of Maximum Marks) × 100
Aggregate for college admissions (most common scenarios):
| College / Exam | Min % (General) | Stream / Subjects |
|---|---|---|
| DU (Science) | 90–95%+ | PCM/PCB (best 4) |
| DU (Commerce) | 92–96%+ | Commerce + English |
| DU (Arts/Humanities) | 87–93%+ | Best 4 subjects |
| JEE Main (eligibility) | 75% in PCM | Physics, Chemistry, Math |
| NEET (eligibility) | 50% in PCB | Physics, Chemistry, Biology |
| IPU CET | 55%+ | PCM for engineering |
| NLU / CLAT | 45%+ | Any stream |
| BHU Entrance | 50–60%+ | Stream-specific |
DU cutoffs change annually and are now published on CUET merit basis — the percentage shown is for reference. JEE Main and NEET: 75%/50% eligibility is in the specific subjects, not overall aggregate. Always check official notifications for the current year.
Misconception 1 — "CGPA 9.8 means 98% marks": Wrong. CGPA 9.8 × 9.5 = 93.1% (CBSE official formula). The common mistake of multiplying by 10 (giving 98%) is used by some other boards (Anna/VTU/VIT) but NOT by CBSE. CBSE explicitly uses ×9.5.
Misconception 2 — "All subjects equally count in CGPA": Only the best 5 main subjects count. If you have a weak grade in one subject but a strong 6th subject, CBSE may automatically substitute, improving your CGPA. This substitution happens at CBSE's level — verify from your mark sheet.
Misconception 3 — "Class 12 also has CGPA": No. Class 12 CBSE reports actual marks and percentage — not CGPA. The CGPA system was only for Class 10 under the CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) scheme.
Misconception 4 — "Grade A1 = 100 marks": A1 covers 91–100 marks, not just 100. A student with 91 marks and another with 100 both get A1 and contribute 10 grade points to CGPA — they are indistinguishable from the CGPA. This is a known limitation of the grade-based CGPA system, which is why Class 12 reverted to marks-based reporting.
