Understanding CGPA is fundamental for every Indian student — from first-year undergraduates to PhD scholars. CGPA affects your placement eligibility, higher education admissions, government job applications, scholarship eligibility, and international study opportunities.
CGPA = Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the weighted average of all your Semester Grade Point Averages (SGPAs), weighted by the total credit hours in each semester. In India, CGPA is measured on a 10-point scale as mandated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for all universities.
SGPA (Semester GPA) reflects your academic performance in a single semester only — it resets each term. CGPA is the cumulative measure across all completed semesters — it builds over your entire degree. Most employers and institutions ask for CGPA, not SGPA.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) mandated the 10-point CGPA grading system for all Indian universities in 2009, aligning with international standards. This replaced the percentage/division system at most universities and enables global academic comparability.
TCS, Infosys, and Wipro require 60%+ (6.0 CGPA ×10) for campus recruitment. PSUs (ONGC, BHEL) require 65%+ (6.5 CGPA). GATE eligibility: 60%. IIM MBA minimum: 50%. UGC NET: 55% in PG. Your CGPA determines access to opportunities — knowing it accurately is essential.
Credit hours represent the weightage of each subject. A 4-credit subject counts twice as much as a 2-credit subject in your SGPA/CGPA. Lab courses typically carry 1–2 credits; theory courses carry 3–5 credits. Your university's course structure document specifies credit hours for every subject.
India's 10-point CGPA differs from the US 4.0 GPA scale. An 8.0 Indian CGPA (×10) ≈ 80% ≈ 3.3–3.5 US GPA. For international applications, agencies like WES convert your Indian CGPA to a 4.0-equivalent. Knowing your conversion is critical for US/UK/Canada university applications.
From your official mark sheet or student portal, note every subject you studied in the semester, along with: (a) the credit hours assigned to that subject by your university (typically 1–6 credits per subject), and (b) the grade point you earned on your university's grading scale. On India's standard 10-point UGC scale: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P/D = 4, F = 0. Do this for every subject, including practicals, labs, projects, and electives.
For each semester, multiply each subject's grade point by its credit hours, sum all the products (credit-weighted grade points), and divide by the total credit hours for that semester.
Example: You have 5 subjects — 4Cr/A+(9), 4Cr/A(8), 3Cr/B+(7), 3Cr/O(10), 2Cr/A(8). Total credits = 16. Weighted points = (4×9)+(4×8)+(3×7)+(3×10)+(2×8) = 36+32+21+30+16 = 135. SGPA = 135 ÷ 16 = 8.44
Once you have SGPA for each semester, calculate CGPA using the credit-weighted average across all semesters. Multiply each semester's SGPA by its total credits, sum all products, and divide by total credits completed across all semesters.
Example: Sem 1: SGPA 8.2, 20 credits → 164. Sem 2: SGPA 7.8, 22 credits → 171.6. Sem 3: SGPA 8.44, 16 credits → 135. Sem 4: SGPA 8.6, 22 credits → 189.2. Total credits = 80. Total weighted = 659.8. CGPA = 659.8 ÷ 80 = 8.25
Different Indian universities use different percentage conversion formulas. The most common are:
Once you have your CGPA and percentage equivalent, verify your eligibility against the 2026 thresholds that matter most for your goals. Use our free eligibility tools or the reference tables below. Remember: always state which formula you used when reporting percentage (e.g., "8.5 CGPA = 85% as per Anna University/IIT formula: CGPA × 10").
(1) Wrong formula: Using ×10 at a CBSE college (should be ×9.5) inflates your % by 5–8%. | (2) Ignoring failed/zero subjects: An F grade (0 points) drags your SGPA significantly — always include every subject. | (3) Unequal credit weighting: A 5-credit subject matters 2.5× more than a 2-credit lab — do not average grade points without credit weights. | (4) Averaging SGPAs directly: CGPA ≠ average of SGPAs — it is the credit-weighted average. A semester with 26 credits counts more than one with 18 credits.
The conversion formula from CGPA to percentage varies by institution. Always use your university's official formula — using the wrong one can misrepresent your academic performance by up to 8%.
This worked example shows how an IIT student calculates their final B.Tech CGPA across all 8 semesters using the official UGC credit-weighted formula.
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits | Cumulative CGPA (after sem) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.20 | 24 | 196.80 | 8.20 |
| Semester 2 | 7.80 | 24 | 187.20 | 8.00 |
| Semester 3 | 8.50 | 24 | 204.00 | 8.17 |
| Semester 4 | 8.10 | 22 | 178.20 | 8.15 |
| Semester 5 | 8.70 | 22 | 191.40 | 8.26 |
| Semester 6 | 8.40 | 22 | 184.80 | 8.29 |
| Semester 7 | 8.90 | 20 | 178.00 | 8.37 |
| Semester 8 | 9.00 | 18 | 162.00 | 8.44 |
| Total | — | 176 | 1,482.40 | CGPA = 8.42 |
Final CGPA = 1,482.40 ÷ 176 = 8.42 / 10
Percentage (IIT formula: ×10) = 8.42 × 10 = 84.2% (First Class with Distinction)
This example shows how to calculate SGPA for a single semester at a South Indian university (Anna University, VIT, SRM) using the 10-point grading scale.
| Subject | Credits | Grade | Grade Points | Credits × Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics III | 4 | B+ (7) | 7 | 28 |
| Data Structures & Algorithms | 4 | A (8) | 8 | 32 |
| Computer Organisation | 4 | A+ (9) | 9 | 36 |
| Object-Oriented Programming | 3 | O (10) | 10 | 30 |
| Digital Principles | 3 | A (8) | 8 | 24 |
| DS Lab | 2 | O (10) | 10 | 20 |
| OOP Lab | 2 | A+ (9) | 9 | 18 |
| Total | 22 | — | — | 188 |
SGPA = 188 ÷ 22 = 8.55
Percentage (Anna University/VIT formula: ×10) = 8.55 × 10 = 85.5%
CBSE-aligned universities use the CGPA × 9.5 formula, which gives a lower percentage for the same CGPA compared to IIT/NIT/Anna University. This table shows the difference clearly for students applying to both types of institutions.

Both SGPA and CGPA are grade point averages — but they serve different purposes and are calculated from different data sets. Confusing them is one of the most common academic mistakes Indian students make when filling application forms.
SGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Subject A: 4 credits, Grade A+ (9 pts) → 36
Subject B: 4 credits, Grade A (8 pts) → 32
Subject C: 3 credits, Grade B+ (7 pts) → 21
Subject D: 3 credits, Grade O (10 pts) → 30
Lab E: 2 credits, Grade A (8 pts) → 16
Total Credits = 16
Total Weighted Points = 135
SGPA = 135 ÷ 16 = 8.44
This SGPA is then used as input for the CGPA calculation across semesters.
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits
Semester 1: SGPA 8.2, 20 credits → 164
Semester 2: SGPA 7.8, 22 credits → 171.6
Semester 3: SGPA 8.44, 16 credits → 135.04
Semester 4: SGPA 8.60, 22 credits → 189.2
Total Credits = 80
Total Weighted = 659.84
CGPA = 659.84 ÷ 80 = 8.25
Percentage (×10) = 82.5% | US GPA ≈ 3.4
