⚠️ These are approximate equivalent marks derived from the percentage formula. Actual marks on a mark sheet are determined by the raw exam scores — not back-calculated from CGPA. Use these values for application forms and equivalency purposes only. SPPU Pune uses ×9.3 instead of ×9.5 (UGC) or ×10 (Anna).
How to Convert CGPA to Marks – Complete Method 2025–26
Converting CGPA to marks is a two-step process — first convert CGPA to percentage using your university's formula, then convert percentage to marks using the maximum marks of the paper.
📐 CGPA to Marks – The Two-Step Formula
Step 1: CGPA → Percentage (use your university's official formula)
- UGC CBCS / Delhi University: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
- Anna University / VTU / VIT / Mumbai / AKTU: Percentage = CGPA × 10
- SPPU Pune: Percentage = CGPA × 9.3
- IIT / NIT (approximate): Percentage = CGPA × 9.81
- US 4-Point GPA: Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4) × 100
Step 2: Percentage → Marks (apply to your paper's maximum marks)
- Marks out of 100: Marks = Percentage (e.g., 80.75% = 80.75/100)
- Marks out of 75: Marks = Percentage ÷ 100 × 75 (e.g., 80.75% → 60.56/75)
- Marks out of 50: Marks = Percentage ÷ 100 × 50 (e.g., 80.75% → 40.38/50)
- Custom: Marks = Percentage ÷ 100 × Max Marks
✏️ Worked Example — CGPA 8.5, UGC Formula, Out of 100
Given: CGPA = 8.5 (UGC CBCS / Delhi University scale)
Step 1 — CGPA to Percentage:
Percentage = 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%
Step 2 — Percentage to Marks (out of 100):
Marks = 80.75 ÷ 100 × 100 = 80.75 marks out of 100
Step 2B — Same CGPA, Marks out of 75:
Marks = 80.75 ÷ 100 × 75 = 60.56 marks out of 75
Step 2C — Same CGPA, Marks out of 50:
Marks = 80.75 ÷ 100 × 50 = 40.38 marks out of 50
Note: These are approximate equivalent marks. Your actual exam mark sheet shows raw marks which determined the grade — the reverse calculation gives an approximate range, not the exact original marks.
✏️ Worked Example — CGPA 7.5, Anna University, Out of 75
Given: CGPA = 7.5 (Anna University / VTU / VIT scale)
Step 1 — CGPA to Percentage:
Percentage = 7.5 × 10 = 75%
Step 2 — Percentage to Marks (out of 75):
Marks = 75 ÷ 100 × 75 = 56.25 marks out of 75
Same CGPA, out of 100:
Marks = 75 ÷ 100 × 100 = 75 marks out of 100
Same CGPA, out of 50:
Marks = 75 ÷ 100 × 50 = 37.5 marks out of 50
Anna University, VTU Karnataka, VIT Vellore, Mumbai University, and AKTU all use the ×10 formula, making the percentage equal to CGPA × 10. This simplifies calculation: 7.5 CGPA = 75% = 75/100 = 56.25/75 = 37.5/50.
Why Students Need a CGPA to Marks Converter 2025–26
Job Applications Asking for Marks
Many older company application portals, government forms, and PSU applications still ask for "marks obtained out of maximum marks" rather than CGPA. This converter gives you the correct marks equivalent accepted by employers for CGPA-based transcripts.
Government Exam Eligibility
UPSC, SSC, IBPS, state PSC, and railway applications often ask for percentage or marks. Convert your CGPA to marks out of 100 (which equals percentage) or to marks out of the specific maximum stated in the eligibility criteria.
Scholarship & Hostel Forms
NSP (National Scholarship Portal), post-matric scholarship, and many college hostel allotment forms ask for marks out of 100 or maximum marks. This converter gives the correct marks equivalent of your CGPA for these forms.
Study Abroad Applications
Some international university portals (especially in Germany and France) ask for marks out of the maximum rather than a GPA score. Convert your CGPA to the equivalent percentage/marks to fill these fields correctly.
Knowing Your Mark Range
Students often want to understand what range of actual exam marks corresponds to their CGPA grade. This converter shows the mark range (e.g., a B+ grade = 55–64% marks out of 100 for UGC CBCS) for better exam planning.
All 3 Directions Covered
CGPA → Marks, Percentage → Marks, and Marks → CGPA — all three conversion directions, covering every scenario students encounter. Supports 15+ university formulas and 7 different maximum mark totals.
How to Use the CGPA to Marks Calculator – Step by Step
Mode 1 — CGPA to Marks: Select University and Max Marks
Click "CGPA → Marks" tab (default). Enter your CGPA (e.g., 8.5 on a 10-point scale, or 3.2 on a 4-point scale). Select your university from the dropdown — this determines which percentage formula is applied (×9.5 for UGC/DU, ×10 for Anna/VTU/VIT/Mumbai/AKTU, ×9.3 for SPPU, ×9.81 for IIT/NIT). Select the maximum marks for the paper or exam you want to convert to (100, 75, 50, 60, 200, 150, 300, or Custom). If your university uses a non-standard multiplier, select "Custom Multiplier" and enter it directly along with your custom maximum marks.
Mode 2 — Percentage to Marks: Direct Conversion
Click "% → Marks" tab. If you already know your percentage (e.g., from a mark sheet that shows both CGPA and percentage), enter it directly. Select the maximum marks total. The formula is simply: Marks = Percentage ÷ 100 × Maximum Marks. This mode requires no university formula selection — it works for any percentage from any source. Useful when converting a known percentage to a different marks total (e.g., you know your percentage is 76% and want to know what that is out of 75 marks).
Mode 3 — Marks to CGPA: Reverse Conversion
Click "Marks → CGPA" tab. Enter your marks obtained and maximum marks. Select your university. The calculator computes: Percentage = (Marks ÷ Max) × 100, then CGPA = Percentage ÷ Divisor (9.5 for UGC, 10 for Anna/VTU/VIT etc.), then applies grade boundaries to show your grade letter. Also shows the full result for all mark totals simultaneously — so entering 72 out of 100 will also show equivalents for 75, 50, and 200 totals.
Using Results in Application Forms
Most government and employer application forms that ask for "marks" want the percentage equivalent (marks out of 100). Use the "Marks / 100" result directly as your percentage figure. If a form asks for "marks obtained" and "maximum marks," use the marks figure for your selected maximum (e.g., 80.75 obtained, 100 maximum). If a form asks for "percentage," round to 2 decimal places (e.g., 80.75%). Always cross-check with your official university mark sheet — the CGPA to marks conversion is an approximation; your official marks are the authoritative figures.
CGPA is calculated from grades, not raw marks. A grade of A (8.0 points) covers any marks percentage from 65% to 74.9% in the UGC CBCS system. So a student with 65% marks and a student with 74% marks both have the same grade (A = 8.0) and therefore the same contribution to CGPA. When you reverse-convert CGPA 8.0 to marks, you can only say the marks were approximately in the 65–74% range — you cannot know the exact marks from CGPA alone. The calculator gives the midpoint or expected value of the grade band as the "marks equivalent." For official purposes, always use your original mark sheet which shows the actual marks obtained.
✅ Key Facts About CGPA to Marks Conversion for 2025–26 Students
- CGPA to marks conversion is always an approximation — the exact marks cannot be recovered from CGPA alone because multiple mark ranges map to the same grade
- For government forms and job applications: use marks out of 100 = percentage (e.g., CGPA 8.5, UGC = 80.75/100 = 80.75%)
- For a paper with max marks 75: use Marks = (CGPA × Multiplier) ÷ 100 × 75 (e.g., CGPA 8.5 UGC = 80.75 ÷ 100 × 75 = 60.56/75)
- The same CGPA gives different marks depending on which university formula is used — UGC (×9.5) gives lower marks than Anna/VTU/VIT (×10) for the same CGPA
- For National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and post-matric scholarship forms: enter your percentage (CGPA × multiplier) as "percentage of marks" — not the CGPA number itself
- IIT/NIT use Senate-specific multipliers that vary by institution — check your official IIT transcript which typically shows both CGPA and percentage
- SPPU Pune uses ×9.3, which gives lower percentage/marks than both UGC (×9.5) and Anna/VTU (×10) for the same CGPA
- For 4-point GPA to marks: GPA ÷ 4 × 100 = Percentage, then Percentage ÷ 100 × Max Marks
⚠️ Important: CGPA to Marks Is Not Exact — Here's Why
Grades cover a range of marks: In UGC CBCS, the grade A covers 65–74.9% of marks. Any student whose marks fell anywhere in this range gets grade A (8.0 grade points) and therefore the same contribution to CGPA. When you reverse-convert CGPA 8.0 to marks, all you can say is the marks were in the 65–74.9% range for that particular subject at a UGC university.
CGPA is credit-weighted: Your overall CGPA combines multiple subjects with different credit weights. The reverse conversion of cumulative CGPA to a "marks equivalent" is therefore a further approximation — it represents a weighted average of the grade midpoints, not any specific exam's marks.
What to do instead: For official submissions, always use your original mark sheet (which shows actual marks) or your official percentage as printed on your transcript. Use this calculator only for planning purposes, for filling forms that ask for approximate marks when your original mark sheet is unavailable, or for understanding what mark range your CGPA represents.
