The most comprehensive IIT CGPA and CPI calculator for 2025–26, covering all 23 IITs with their specific grading terminology, SPI/CPI calculation, percentage conversion, and US GPA conversion for study abroad.
Works for all 23 IITs — IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, BHU, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, and all newer IITs. All use the 10-point grading scale with CPI/SPI terminology.
Semester SPI (subject-wise), Overall CPI (multi-semester), CPI to Percentage (IIT-specific formulas), CPI to 4.0 GPA (3 methods), and Target SPI Planner — all free, all instant, all in one place.
Uses correct IIT terminology: SPI (Semester Performance Index) instead of SGPA, CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) instead of CGPA. Covers both absolute and relative grading systems used across different IITs.
Converts IIT CPI to US 4.0 GPA using Linear, WES-standard, and Modified Bavarian formulas — essential for MS/PhD applications to MIT, Stanford, CMU, Caltech, and top global universities.
Calculate the exact SPI needed this semester to reach your target CPI. Critical for IIT students trying to reach 8.0+ CPI for top placements, research positions, or to maintain eligibility for academic programmes.
Works perfectly on all Android and iOS devices. Add courses dynamically, calculate CPI instantly. No login, no signup, no data stored. Completely free forever for all IIT students.
IITs use specific terminology different from other Indian universities: SPI (Semester Performance Index) = what other colleges call SGPA — your performance in a single semester. CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) = what other colleges call CGPA — your cumulative performance across all semesters. Both are calculated on a 10-point scale using credit-weighted averages. IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, and all 23 IITs use this same CPI/SPI system. Check your IIT academic portal (IITB: ASC portal, IITD: CGMS, IITM: SHAALE, etc.) for your official CPI.
In the Semester SPI tab, add each course with its grade and credit value. IIT grade points: O/Ex = 10, AA = 10, AB = 9, BB = 8, BC = 7, CC = 6, CD = 5, DD = 4, F = 0 (varies by IIT — IIT Bombay uses a slightly different mapping than IIT Kanpur). Most IIT B.Tech theory courses carry 3–4 credits; labs carry 2–3 credits; project courses carry 6–12 credits. Check your specific IIT's grade sheet from the academic portal for exact grades and credit values.
SPI = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Example for IIT Bombay: courses with grades AA(10)×4cr, AB(9)×4cr, BB(8)×3cr, BC(7)×3cr, Lab BB(8)×2cr: SPI = (40+36+24+21+16) ÷ 16 = 137 ÷ 16 = 8.56. Your SPI appears on the IIT semester grade sheet. The calculator handles this arithmetic instantly — enter your grades from your semester marksheet and click Calculate.
Switch to the CPI tab and enter your SPI and credits for each completed semester. CPI = Σ(SPI_i × Credits_i) ÷ Σ(All Credits). Your official IIT CPI is updated after every semester on your academic portal. For IIT B.Tech: 8 semesters typically totalling 180–200 credits. Your final CPI on the degree certificate is what matters for: campus placement shortlisting, branch change eligibility, PhD admission at IITs, MS abroad applications, and government job percentage calculations.
For job applications and government forms: Percentage = CPI × 10 (standard at most IITs). For MS abroad applications: 4.0 GPA = CPI × 0.4 (Linear / WES standard). Examples: CPI 9.0 → 90% → 3.6 GPA; CPI 8.5 → 85% → 3.4 GPA; CPI 8.0 → 80% → 3.2 GPA; CPI 7.5 → 75% → 3.0 GPA. For German university applications, use the Modified Bavarian formula: German Grade = 4 − 3×(CPI−5)/5 (approximately). Use the % and GPA tabs above for instant calculation with all formula options.
Critical difference for IIT students: Most IITs use relative grading — your grade depends on your class rank, not just your raw marks. The professor sets a grade distribution (typically: top 5–10% get AA/O, next 20–25% get AB/A, etc.). This means the same raw marks (e.g., 75/100) can give you AA in one semester and BB in another depending on your cohort's performance. This is why you cannot simply calculate IIT CPI from marks alone — you must use the official grade awarded on your grade sheet, which already accounts for relative grading. Some newer IITs and some specific courses use absolute grading where fixed percentage thresholds determine grades.
All 23 IITs use a 10-point CPI/SPI system, but the exact grade letters and mappings differ between IITs. Here is the complete 2025–26 grading guide for the major IITs.
IIT Bombay uses a 10-point CPI/SPI system. Most courses use relative grading (AB system). Percentage = CPI × 10. Check grades on ASC Portal (IITB).
| Grade | Grade Points | Performance | % Equiv. |
|---|---|---|---|
| AA | 10 | Outstanding | 91–100% |
| AB | 9 | Excellent | 81–90% |
| BB | 8 | Very Good | 71–80% |
| BC | 7 | Good | 61–70% |
| CC | 6 | Average | 51–60% |
| CD | 5 | Below Average | 45–50% |
| DD | 4 | Pass | 40–44% |
| FF | 0 | Fail | Below 40% |
These IITs use a 10-point scale with O/A+/A/B+/B/C/D/F grading (CBCS pattern at newer IITs; legacy A/B/C at older ones):
| Grade (IITD) | Grade Points | Marks Range | % Equiv. |
|---|---|---|---|
| O (Outstanding) | 10 | 90–100 | 91%+ |
| A+ (Excellent) | 9 | 80–89 | 81–90% |
| A (Very Good) | 8 | 70–79 | 71–80% |
| B+ (Good) | 7 | 60–69 | 61–70% |
| B (Average) | 6 | 50–59 | 51–60% |
| C (Pass) | 5 | 45–49 | 45–50% |
| F (Fail) | 0 | Below 45 | Fail |
IIT Kharagpur (oldest IIT) uses a slightly different grade scale. IIT KGP also refers to CGPA as CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) and SGPA as SPI. The percentage formula used by IIT KGP for many government forms is CGPA × 9.5 (similar to CBSE) rather than CGPA × 10. Always verify from your degree certificate and IIT KGP academic section for the exact formula for specific applications.
| Grade (IIT KGP) | Grade Points | Description | Percentage Equiv. |
|---|---|---|---|
| O (Outstanding) | 10 | Exceptional performance | 90%+ |
| E (Excellent) | 9 | Excellent | 80–89% |
| A (Very Good) | 8 | Very Good | 70–79% |
| B (Good) | 7 | Good | 60–69% |
| C (Average) | 6 | Average | 50–59% |
| P (Pass) | 5 | Pass | 45–49% |
| F (Fail) | 0 | Fail | Below 45% |
