📊 Raw → Scale Score Converter

2025–26 Scales
SAT: 800 questions (Math + EBRW) · Raw correct answers → scaled via College Board equating table · Max 1600

Convert any raw score to a scaled score using simple linear interpolation between two scales.

Formula: Scaled = ScaleMin + (Raw / MaxRaw) × (ScaleMax – ScaleMin)
Example: Raw 74/100 → Scale 200–800: 200 + (74/100)×600 = 644

Calculate your percentile rank from raw score and class/test statistics.

Convert raw score using any custom formula — multiply, add offset, clamp to range.

Formula: Scaled = clamp(Raw × Multiplier + Offset, Min, Max)
Example: GATE formula: Score = (Raw/MaxRaw)×100 → Mult=100/MaxRaw, Add=0
Quick Scales: SAT 400–1600 · ACT 1–36 · GRE 130–170 · GMAT 205–805
IELTS 0–9 · TOEFL 0–120 · CAT Percentile · GATE 0–100
Raw scores converted via official equating tables or linear interpolation

How to Convert Raw Score to Scaled Score – Step-by-Step Guide 2026

1

Step 1: Understand the Difference Between Raw Score and Scaled Score

A raw score is the number of questions you answered correctly (minus any penalty for wrong answers). A scaled score is that raw score converted to a fixed scale (like 400–1600 for SAT or 130–170 for GRE) through a process called equating. Equating ensures that a score of, say, 700 on SAT Math means the same level of ability regardless of which test version you took — since different versions have slightly different difficulty levels. Raw scores alone are not comparable across test versions; scaled scores are.

2

Step 2: Calculate Your Adjusted Raw Score (After Penalty Deductions)

For exams without negative marking (modern SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT Focus, IELTS, TOEFL, CAT 2025–26): your raw score = number of correct answers. For exams with negative marking (GATE certain sections, some Indian entrance exams, old SAT pre-2016): Adjusted Raw = Correct – (Wrong × Penalty). For example, if you answered 55 correct and 10 wrong with a –¼ penalty: Adjusted Raw = 55 – (10 × 0.25) = 55 – 2.5 = 52.5 (rounded to 52). Always skip questions where you are genuinely guessing on penalty exams — a random guess has negative expected value.

3

Step 3: Select Your Exam and Enter Your Raw Score

Select your exam from the dropdown in the "By Exam" tab. Enter your raw score (correct answers) and the total number of questions. The calculator uses linear interpolation across the official score scale for a close approximation. For exact scaled scores on the SAT, ACT, and GRE, College Board, ACT Inc., and ETS use proprietary equating tables that vary by test form — our linear approximation is accurate within ±5–10 points for most score ranges and serves well for planning, practice test review, and application strategy purposes.

4

Step 4: Interpret Your Scaled Score and Percentile

Your scaled score result shows the score on the official exam scale, your approximate percentile rank, a score band interpretation (Below Average / Average / Good / Excellent / Top), and admission competitiveness for universities at that score level. For the Percentile tab, use the Z-score method if you know your class mean and standard deviation (common in college courses), the rank method if you know your exam rank and total number of test-takers, or the direct method if you know how many students scored below you.

5

Step 5: Use the Custom or Linear Scale Mode for Any Other Exam

If your exam is not listed (like a state board entrance exam, university entrance, or custom assessment), use the Linear Scale tab: enter your raw score, total questions, and the target scale (e.g., 0–100, 200–800, 0–900). The formula is: Scaled = ScaleMin + (Raw / MaxRaw) × (ScaleMax – ScaleMin). Or use the Custom tab to enter any formula with a multiplier, offset, and clamped range — for example, GATE's normalized score formula or state board equivalency scales.

💡 2026 Key Fact: Raw Score vs Scaled Score – What Universities See

Universities always receive scaled scores, not raw scores. College Board, ETS, ACT Inc., and GMAC report only scaled scores and percentiles to universities — your raw correct answer count never appears on score reports. This is why it is important to convert correctly: a SAT raw of 52 Math correct ≠ SAT Math 520; the equating table converts it differently depending on the specific test form difficulty.

📝
SAT 2026 – Digital SAT
Score Range: 400–1600 (Math 200–800 + EBRW 200–800)
Raw → Scaled via College Board equating table
Math: 44 questions → 200–800
Reading & Writing: 54 questions → 200–800
Total: Math + EBRW = 400–1600
The Digital SAT (dSAT) launched fully in 2024 uses multistage adaptive testing (MST) — Module 1 determines which Module 2 difficulty you receive. Because of this, raw-to-scaled conversion is not strictly linear and depends on module difficulty. No wrong answer penalty (all-or-nothing per question). A perfect raw (all correct) = 1600. College Board equating tables change per test form. Approximate: 44/44 Math = 800; 35–36/44 ≈ 700–730 Math. See satsuite.collegeboard.org
🎓
ACT 2026
Score Range: 1–36 (Composite = average of 4 sections)
Raw Correct → Scale Score (1–36) per section
English: 75 questions → 1–36
Math: 60 questions → 1–36
Reading: 40 questions → 1–36
Science: 40 questions → 1–36
Composite = average of 4 section scores
No wrong answer penalty on ACT — always attempt all questions. Each section's raw score is converted to a 1–36 scale via ACT's equating table (changes per test form). Composite = (E+M+R+S) ÷ 4, rounded to nearest whole number. A perfect 36 composite requires near-perfect raw scores on all sections. Approximate: 75/75 English ≈ 36; 60/60 Math ≈ 36. See act.org

CAT 2026 – Common Admission Test
Scaled Score: 0–198 · Percentile: 0–99.99
VARC: 24 q (MCQ) + 2 TITA → Scaled (0–66)
DILR: 20 q (MCQ) + 2 TITA → Scaled (0–66)
QA: 22 q (MCQ) + 4 TITA → Scaled (0–66)
MCQ: +3 correct, –1 wrong · TITA: +3, no penalty
Total Scaled Score: 0–198 (normalized across slots)
CAT uses normalization across multiple test slots (morning/afternoon) to ensure fairness. Raw score = (Correct × 3) – (MCQ Wrong × 1). Normalized scaled score is then converted to percentile using the performance distribution of all ~3 lakh test-takers. 99+ percentile ≈ scaled score ~148+. IIM cutoffs for 2026–28 batch: IIM Ahmedabad requires 99+ overall percentile. See iimcat.ac.in

Raw to Scale Score – Frequently Asked Questions 2026

The most commonly searched questions about raw score to scaled score conversion, equating, percentiles, and exam-specific scoring — answered for 2026.

What is a raw score vs a scaled score? What is the difference?
A raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly (minus any penalty for wrong answers). It is the direct count from your answer sheet. A scaled score is the raw score converted to a standardized scale (like 400–1600 for SAT, or 130–170 for GRE) through a process called equating. Equating adjusts for the difficulty differences between different test versions/forms, ensuring that a scaled score of 700 means the same level of ability regardless of when you took the exam. Universities receive only scaled scores — never raw scores.
What is score equating and why does it matter for my SAT or GRE result?
Score equating is the statistical process that converts raw scores to scaled scores while accounting for difficulty differences between test forms. For example, if one SAT test form is slightly harder than another, the equating process ensures that a raw score of 40 correct on the harder form results in a higher scaled score than 40 correct on an easier form — reflecting the same level of true ability. This means the raw-to-scaled conversion table is different for every test administration. The tables published by College Board and ETS are proprietary and exam-specific, which is why our calculator provides close approximations rather than exact conversions.
How do I convert my SAT raw score to a scaled score in 2026?
For the 2026 Digital SAT (dSAT): answer all questions (no penalty for wrong answers). Your raw score = total correct answers. The Digital SAT has Math (44 questions, scale 200–800) and Reading & Writing (54 questions, scale 200–800). Raw is converted to scaled via College Board's equating table — approximately: 44/44 Math = 800; 40/44 ≈ 750–770; 35/44 ≈ 700–720; 28/44 ≈ 630–650. The exact conversion depends on the specific test form and module difficulty level you received (which depends on your Module 1 performance). Use our "By Exam → SAT" calculator above for an approximation, or check College Board's official score release for your actual score.
How is GRE score calculated from raw score in 2026?
GRE 2026 Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning each have approximately 27 questions per section (in two sections, adaptive). Your raw score = number correct (no penalty). ETS then equates the raw score to a 130–170 scale using a proprietary table. Approximate: 27/27 Q ≈ 170; 26/27 ≈ 169; 25/27 ≈ 167–168; 23/27 ≈ 163–164; 20/27 ≈ 158–160; 15/27 ≈ 150–154. For GRE Analytical Writing: scored 0–6 in 0.5 increments by trained human raters + ETS's e-rater AI system. The average of both raters is the final AW score. See ETS's official score understanding guide.
How is the CAT 2026 score calculated and normalized?
CAT 2026 raw score = (Correct MCQ × 3) – (Wrong MCQ × 1) + (Correct TITA × 3). Since CAT is conducted in 2 slots with different question sets, IIMs normalize scores across slots using the following method: Scaled Score for a candidate = Mean score of top 0.1% of ALL candidates across slots + (SD of all candidates × raw score – mean of slot) / SD of slot. This normalization ensures fairness regardless of which slot a candidate appeared in. The normalized scaled score (0–198) is then used to calculate sectional and overall percentiles, which are the primary admission criteria. Percentile = (Number of candidates with scaled score ≤ yours / Total candidates) × 100.
What is the GATE score calculation formula for 2026?
GATE 2026 score calculation for papers with multiple sessions: Step 1 — Calculate adjusted marks (after negative marking). Step 2 — Normalize across sessions: Normalized Marks = (Mq + √(Mt × St)) × (M – Mq)/(Mt – Mq) + Mq, where M = candidate's marks, Mq = qualifying marks, Mt = mean top percentile marks, St = SD of top percentile. Step 3 — GATE Score (0–1000) = 1000 × (Normalized Marks – Qualifying Marks) / (Mean Marks of Top 0.1% – Qualifying Marks). For single-session papers, no normalization is applied — raw marks are used directly. GATE Score is what PSUs and IITs use for admission/recruitment. See GATE 2026 official website for qualifying marks by paper.
Should I guess on the SAT or GRE if I'm unsure of an answer in 2026?
Yes — you should always guess on both the 2026 SAT and GRE. Neither exam has a wrong answer penalty (negative marking). This means: (1) On SAT: even a random guess has a positive expected value (1-in-4 = +0.25 expected on average). Never leave an SAT question blank. (2) On GRE: same — no penalty, so always answer all questions. On exams WITH penalties (CAT MCQ = –1 per wrong; GATE MCQ = –⅓ or –⅔), the guessing strategy changes: only guess if you can eliminate at least 1–2 options and your confidence is above the penalty threshold. The break-even point: for CAT (–1 per wrong, +3 correct), you need >25% confidence to guess; for GATE 1-mark (–⅓), you need >25% confidence.
What is a good SAT score for US universities in 2026?
For 2026 admissions: 1550–1600 = competitive for Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford (typically 75th percentile of admitted class is 1560+); 1480–1550 = competitive for most Ivy League and Top 10 universities; 1400–1480 = competitive for Top 25 universities; 1300–1400 = competitive for Top 50 universities and strong private colleges; 1200–1300 = suitable for most public universities (UC schools, Big Ten, etc.); 1000–1200 = community college and many state universities; Below 1000 = test prep strongly recommended. Note: In 2026, many Top 50 US universities have made SAT test-optional, meaning a strong GPA and extracurriculars can offset a below-target SAT score.
What GRE score is good for top MS programs in 2026?
GRE score benchmarks for 2026 MS admissions: Quantitative 168–170: Competitive for MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon CS/Engineering (top ~4% of all GRE test-takers); 163–167 Q: Good for Top 20 engineering MS programs; 158–162 Q: Competitive for Top 50 MS programs; 155–157 Q: Acceptable for most accredited programs. For Verbal: most STEM programs care less about V score; 150+ is fine. For AW: 4.0+ is generally considered good. Important 2026 update: Many top US MS programs (MIT EECS, Stanford CS, CMU) have moved to GRE optional or dropped GRE entirely — check each program's specific 2026 requirements at ets.org/gre.
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
IELTS Overall Band Score = average of the four section scores (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4, rounded to the nearest 0.5. Example: L=7.5, R=8.0, W=6.5, S=7.0 → Average = 29/4 = 7.25 → Rounded to 7.0 (rounding down at 0.25, up at 0.75). Note: IELTS rounds to the nearest whole or half band — so 7.25 rounds DOWN to 7.0 and 7.75 rounds UP to 8.0. Listening and Academic Reading have official raw-to-band tables (approx. 39–40/40 = Band 9). Writing and Speaking are judged holistically by trained examiners. Computer-based IELTS results are available in 3–5 days; paper-based in 13 days. See ielts.org for official band descriptors.
What is the GMAT Focus Edition score range and how is it calculated in 2026?
The GMAT Focus Edition (fully launched 2024, the only GMAT available since early 2024) has a total score range of 205–805 in 10-point increments. Each of the three sections (Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights) scores 60–90. The total score is a scaled combination of the three section scores — not a simple sum. Key 2026 benchmarks: 655+ ≈ 70th percentile overall; 705+ ≈ 83rd percentile; 745+ ≈ 91st percentile; 805 = 99th percentile. IIM Ahmedabad requires GMAT 700+ (typically 720+ for strong profiles). Top US MBA programs (HBS, Wharton, Booth) have median GMATs of 730–760 in 2026. See mba.com/exams/gmat-exam.
How do I calculate my percentile from my exam rank?
Percentile from rank formula: Percentile = ((Total Students – Rank) / Total Students) × 100. Example: Rank 45 out of 500 students → Percentile = ((500 – 45) / 500) × 100 = (455/500) × 100 = 91st percentile. This means you scored higher than 91% of all test-takers. Alternatively, if you know how many students scored below you: Percentile = (Students Below You / Total Students) × 100. For Z-score based percentile (when you know mean and standard deviation): Z = (Your Score – Mean) / SD, then look up the Z-table for the cumulative probability (percentile). Use our Percentile tab for instant calculation.
Does the Digital SAT 2026 use adaptive testing? How does it affect scaling?
Yes — the Digital SAT (dSAT) uses Multistage Adaptive Testing (MST). Each subject (Math and Reading & Writing) has two modules. Module 1 is the same difficulty for all test-takers. Based on your Module 1 performance, you are routed to either a harder or easier Module 2. If you get the harder Module 2 (because you did well on Module 1), achieving the same number correct gives you a higher scaled score than the same performance on the easier Module 2 — because the equating process credits the difficulty. This means you should aim to perform well on Module 1 to access the higher-scoring module pathway. The adaptive nature makes practice test scaling more approximate than pre-2024 paper SAT scaling tables.
