The Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) conducted for BE/BSc Engineering admissions in Pakistan. Here is the official 2025–26 paper structure.
Your raw ECAT score = total correct answers × 1 mark each. No negative marking — never leave an answer blank. For UET ECAT: Physics (80) + Chemistry (80) + Mathematics (80) + English (30) = 270 marks total standard paper. Converted to percentage: (raw score / 270) × 100. Some papers include IQ/Logical Reasoning for 400 total marks. Use the ECAT Score tab above to calculate your total and subject-wise breakdown. Critical UET requirement: you must score at least 40% in each of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics individually — even if your total is high, failing any one subject disqualifies you from merit.
The standard Punjab engineering merit formula (UET Lahore, UET Taxila, and most affiliated colleges): Merit % = (ECAT/400 × 50) + (FSc/Total × 40) + (Matric/Total × 10). Example: ECAT 285/400 (71.25%), FSc 980/1100 (89.09%), Matric 480/500 (96%): Merit = (285/400 × 50) + (980/1100 × 40) + (480/500 × 10) = 35.625 + 35.636 + 9.6 = 80.86%. Use the Merit % tab above to calculate this instantly. Note: NED Karachi, MUET Jamshoro, and Mehran UET use the same 50/40/10 formula but may have province-specific adjustments — verify from their official admission advertisements.
Engineering college seats in Pakistan are divided into: Open Merit (OM): Available to all qualifying students — highest competition, 50–60% of seats; Self-Finance (SF): Higher fees, lower merit cutoff (~3–7% below OM); Provincial Quota: Reserved by province domicile; Foreign/Overseas Pakistanis: Reserved for overseas Pakistani students; Disability / Special Seats: Reserved categories. At UET Lahore, the merit list runs in rounds — Round 1 (highest merit gets first choice), Round 2, Round 3. If you get a department in Round 1, secure admission; if your department is upgraded in a later round, decide accordingly. Different disciplines within the same university have different merit cutoffs — Computer Engineering is the highest, followed by Electrical, then Mechanical, Civil, Chemical at UET Lahore.
After calculating your merit %, compare with historical closing merits of your target engineering colleges. These give the best estimate for 2026, though actual cutoffs fluctuate each year. For UET Lahore 2024–25: Computer Engineering OM closing merit approximately 82–86%; Electrical Engineering 79–83%; Mechanical 77–81%; Civil 75–79%. For UET Taxila: CS slightly lower at 78–82%. NED Karachi: CS/IT 75–80% (Sindh domicile required). Use the College Predictor tab above for personalized estimates based on your specific merit %.
Applications for engineering admissions are submitted through: Punjab: UET Lahore's Admission Portal (uet.edu.pk) — covers UET Lahore, UET Taxila, and all affiliated Punjab engineering colleges in one application; Sindh: NED University (ned.edu.pk), MUET Jamshoro (muet.edu.pk), Mehran UET separately; KPK: ETEA (etea.edu.pk) — Engineering colleges use ETEA test; Balochistan: QUEST (quest.edu.pk); NUST: Direct application at nust.edu.pk after NET; PIEAS: Separate admission test and application at pieas.edu.pk. Apply to multiple colleges and disciplines — always apply beyond your "safe" estimate as merit fluctuates year to year.
The ECAT merit formula means Mathematics performance has an outsized impact — Mathematics is 80/400 marks (20% of ECAT), and ECAT itself is 50% of merit. But critically, you must pass each of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics individually with 40% minimum. Unlike MDCAT where Biology dominates, ECAT is balanced — score well in all three core subjects. English (30 marks) is often underestimated: consistent English preparation can secure 25–30/30 with minimal effort and meaningfully boosts overall merit. If your FSc marks are below 85%, every extra mark in ECAT (ECAT contributes 50% of merit vs FSc's 40%) has greater leverage on your final merit than improving FSc (which is fixed).
Merit % = (ECAT Score/400 × 50) + (FSc/Total × 40) + (Matric/Total × 10)
This formula is used by UET Lahore, UET Taxila, and all UET-affiliated Punjab engineering colleges. Breakdown of each component:
