Credit hours are the standard unit of academic measurement at Pakistani universities, adopted under HEC's semester system. Understanding them is essential for every university student in Pakistan.
One credit hour equals one hour of classroom instruction per week for 16–18 weeks (one semester). A 3-credit course meets 3 hours per week all semester. Labs typically count as 1 credit per 3 hours/week of practical work.
A 4-credit course contributes four times more to your CGPA than a 1-credit course. This is why performing well in high-credit core subjects matters disproportionately for your GPA at Pakistani universities.
Your degree is only awarded after completing the minimum required credit hours. BS requires 124–136 credits; MS requires 30 credits; PhD requires 18+ coursework credits plus dissertation. All as per HEC 2025–26.
Credit hours can be transferred between HEC-recognized universities with the receiving institution's approval. HEC policy allows transfer of up to 50% of degree credits from an accredited Pakistani university.
All HEC-chartered universities in Pakistan must follow the HEC semester system with standardized credit hour definitions. This includes LUMS, NUST, IBA, FAST, COMSATS, UET, Punjab University, and 250+ institutions.
Pakistan's credit hour system is compatible with the US credit hour system. Pakistani BS degrees (4-year, 130+ credits) are recognized globally as equivalent to international bachelor's degrees by WES and major universities.

Pakistani universities use the L-T-P (Lecture-Tutorial-Practical) framework: Credit Hours = L + T + (P ÷ 2 or 3)
HEC specifies 1 credit hour = 1 hour/week lecture + ~2 hours/week self-study. A 3-credit course means ~9 hours/week total student engagement.

How major Pakistani universities implement the credit hour system, typical semester loads, and BS degree credit requirements.
HEC Pakistan allows credit transfer between all HEC-recognized universities: (1) Both universities must be HEC-chartered; (2) The programme must be equivalent; (3) Student must have minimum CGPA 2.0 at sending university; (4) Up to 50% of total degree credits may transfer — you must complete at least 50% at the receiving institution; (5) Individual course transfer requires academic committee approval based on syllabus equivalency. Credit transfer is not automatic — it requires formal application and review taking 4–8 weeks.
(1) Apply to the receiving university's Registrar with official transcript; (2) Submit course descriptions and syllabi from previous institution; (3) Academic committee reviews each course for content equivalency (75%+ syllabus overlap typically required); (4) Approved credits appear on transcript as "TC" (Transfer Credit); (5) Non-equivalent courses must be retaken; (6) CGPA is typically recalculated only from courses taken at the new university — transfer credits usually don't affect CGPA. This can benefit students who had a poor GPA start at their previous institution.
Students transferring from traditional annual-system universities (Punjab University, Karachi University legacy faculties) to semester-system universities face a conversion challenge. HEC guideline: 1 year of annual study ≈ 16–18 credit hours; each annual exam paper ≈ 3 credit hours. However, this is NOT automatic — each paper must be evaluated for content equivalency by the receiving university. CGPA is typically recalculated only from new courses, which can actually benefit students with lower annual exam percentages.
Pakistan ↔ International credit transfer: US to Pakistan: Direct 1:1 mapping (same system); UK to Pakistan: 10 UK CATS ≈ 1 Pakistani credit hour (120 CATS/year ≈ 12 Pakistani credits for that component); ECTS (European): 1 ECTS ≈ 0.5 Pakistani credit hour. For incoming international transfers, HEC Foreign Degree Attestation is required — apply at hec.gov.pk (4–8 weeks processing). For outgoing students, Pakistani BS degrees (130+ credits) are widely recognized as equivalent to international bachelor's degrees by WES for US/Canada applications.
