Understanding how marks convert to CGPA requires knowing your university's grade boundaries and credit system. Here is the complete, step-by-step explanation.
Converting marks to CGPA involves three distinct steps. Each step uses your university's specific rules — which is why the converter asks you to select your university before calculating.
| Marks % | Grade | Grade Points (10-pt) | Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85–100% | O (Outstanding) | 10 | First Class Distinction |
| 75–84% | A+ (Excellent) | 9 | First Class Distinction |
| 65–74% | A (Very Good) | 8 | First Class |
| 55–64% | B+ (Good) | 7 | First Class |
| 50–54% | B (Above Average) | 6 | Second Class |
| 45–49% | C (Satisfactory) | 5 | Second Class |
| 40–44% | D (Pass) | 4 | Pass Class |
| Below 40% | F (Fail) | 0 | Fail |
These are the UGC standard boundaries. Some universities (Anna University, VTU, Mumbai) use identical boundaries. SPPU may use slightly different thresholds — always verify with your university's current academic regulations.

Click "Subject Marks" tab. Select your university's grading scale from the dropdown (UGC CBCS, Anna University, VTU, Mumbai, SPPU, VIT, AKTU, IIT, US 4-pt, etc.). Select the maximum marks per subject (100, 75, 50, 60, 200, or Custom). If different subjects have different maximums, select "Custom" to enter the maximum separately for each subject. This is the most common use case — entering your marks after results are declared to see your CGPA before the official transcript is published.
For each subject row, enter: (1) Subject name (optional — for identification in the breakdown table); (2) Marks obtained (e.g., 72 out of 100); (3) Maximum marks if using Custom mode; (4) Credit hours assigned to this subject under your CBCS scheme (typically 2–6 credits per subject — check your course structure document). Add as many subjects as needed using the "Add Subject" button. The calculator applies your university's grade boundary table to each subject's marks percentage and assigns the correct grade points.
Click the "% → CGPA" tab. Enter your overall percentage (e.g., 78.5%). Select your target scale (10-pt UGC, 10-pt Anna/VTU/VIT, 10-pt SPPU, or 4-pt GPA). The calculator applies the official formula for your university: for UGC, CGPA = % ÷ 9.5; for Anna/VTU/VIT/Mumbai, CGPA = % ÷ 10; for SPPU, CGPA = % ÷ 9.3; for 4-pt US GPA, GPA = (% ÷ 100) × 4. This mode is useful when you already know your overall percentage from a mark sheet or result portal and want the CGPA equivalent for applications.
Click the "CGPA → Marks" tab. Enter your CGPA, select the scale (10-pt or 4-pt), and enter the maximum marks for the paper (e.g., 100). The calculator shows the marks range corresponding to your CGPA grade level. This is useful for: checking if you achieved a specific grade boundary, understanding what marks you need in remaining subjects to maintain your target CGPA, or explaining your CGPA to someone unfamiliar with the grade point system.
Most Indian universities split marks into internal assessment (IA) and external examination. For example, in VTU: 100 marks = 40 IA + 60 External. In Anna University: 100 marks = 30 IA + 70 External. When entering marks in this calculator, enter your total marks (IA + External combined) out of the total maximum. If your mark sheet shows IA and External separately, add them together first. The grade is assigned on the combined total. Some universities also have separate passing criteria for IA and External — you may pass overall but fail if you scored below the minimum in either component. This calculator computes CGPA from total marks and does not apply minimum passing sub-criteria — always check your official result for the actual pass/fail status.
Grade boundaries in Indian universities are applied to the percentage, not the raw marks. Small differences in marks can cross a grade boundary: 64.9% and 65.0% are different grades (B+ vs A), even though the marks difference may be just 0.1 or 1 mark out of 100. This boundary effect is the most common reason why a student's calculated CGPA may differ from the official CGPA — the official calculation applies boundaries after final marks tallying and any grace mark additions, while this calculator applies boundaries directly to the marks you enter.
Similarly, some universities award grace marks (1–3 extra marks per subject) to prevent students from just missing a passing grade or a higher grade boundary. These grace marks are not visible on the basic result — they are automatically applied by the university's examination system. If your university applies grace marks, your official CGPA may be slightly higher than what this calculator shows.
