GATE Score Formula 2026 – How IIT Calculates Your GATE Score

The official GATE score formula is defined by IIT and used by all IITs/NITs for M.Tech admissions. Here is exactly how your raw marks become a GATE score on the 1000-point scale.

⚡ Official GATE 2026 Score Formula Explained

The GATE score is calculated on a 1000-point scale using this formula from IIT:

GATE Score (S) = 350 + 650 × (M − M_min) / (M_q_max − M_min)

  • S_max = 1000 — maximum possible GATE score (fixed constant)
  • S_min = 350 — minimum score for all qualified candidates (fixed constant)
  • M = your normalized marks out of 100 (or raw marks for single-session papers)
  • M_min = mean marks of candidates who scored below the qualifying cutoff (paper-specific, approximately 25–35)
  • M_q_max = marks scored by the top candidate across all sessions for your paper — typically 85–98, announced with results
  • Example: Marks 60, M_q_max 93, M_min 28: Score = 350 + 650 × (60−28)/(93−28) = 350 + 650 × 0.4923 = 350 + 320 = 670

Multi-Session Normalization Formula

For papers in multiple sessions (ME, CS, ECE, CE, EE, IN), IIT applies normalization to correct for difficulty differences between sessions:

M̄ = M × (M̄_tg – M̄_qg) / (M̄_t – M̄_q) + M̄_qg

  • M̄_t = mean of top 0.1% in your session
  • M̄_tg = mean of top 0.1% across ALL sessions
  • M̄_q = mean of all candidates in your session
  • M̄_qg = mean across ALL sessions globally

If your session was harder (lower mean), normalization raises your marks. IIT publishes these parameters with official results.

How to Calculate GATE Score 2026 – Step-by-Step Guide

1

Step 1: Know Your Raw Marks Out of 100

GATE has 65 questions for 100 marks total: 10 GA questions (15 marks) + 55 technical questions (85 marks). Marking: correct MCQ = +1 or +2; wrong MCQ = −1/3 or −2/3 (negative marking for MCQs only); correct MSQ/NAT = +1 or +2; wrong MSQ/NAT = 0 (no negative marking). Calculate your estimated raw marks. Example: 40 correct MCQs (25 one-mark + 15 two-mark) = 25 + 30 = 55 marks minus 5 wrong MCQs (2 one-mark, 3 two-mark) = −0.67−2.00 = −2.67. Net = 52.33/100 raw marks.

2

Step 2: Apply Normalization (Multi-Session Papers)

For large papers (ME, CS, ECE, CE, EE, IN) conducted in 2+ sessions, IIT normalizes marks to account for session difficulty differences. Formula: M̄ = M × (M̄_tg – M̄_qg) / (M̄_t – M̄_q) + M̄_qg. IIT publishes the normalization parameters (M̄_t, M̄_tg, M̄_q, M̄_qg) with the final results — before results you can only estimate. In the calculator above, select "Multi-Session" and enter these values from the official GATE answer key response. Single-session papers (AG, MN, some smaller papers) don't require normalization.

3

Step 3: Apply the GATE Score Formula

Use the formula: S = 350 + 650 × (M – M_min) / (M_q_max – M_min). M_q_max = topper's marks across all sessions (announced with results, typically 85–98). M_min = mean of candidates below qualifying threshold (paper-specific, approximately 25–35). If your M is below M_min, you don't qualify. If M ≥ M_min, your GATE Score is between 350–1000. The formula is linear: every additional mark in the paper proportionally increases your GATE score by approximately 650 / (M_q_max – M_min) points.

4

Step 4: Estimate Percentile & AIR

Percentile = percentage of candidates who scored below you. IIT doesn't publish per-score percentile maps pre-results, but historical distributions allow estimation. General guide for large papers (ME, CS): GATE Score 900+ ≈ top 0.5–1% (AIR <2,200); 800–900 ≈ top 2–5% (AIR 2,200–11,000); 700–800 ≈ top 6–15% (AIR 11,000–33,000); 600–700 ≈ top 16–25% (AIR 33,000–55,000). For smaller papers (CH, IN, PI), the same score corresponds to fewer candidates — a 700 score in CH with 25,000 candidates = AIR ~1,500 vs a 700 in ME with 2,20,000 = AIR ~13,200.

5

Step 5: Use GATE Score for Admissions & PSU Recruitment

With your GATE scorecard you can: (1) Apply for M.Tech/ME/MS at IITs through COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) — all IIT M.Tech offers come through COAP, no separate applications; (2) Apply to NITs/IIITs through CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech); (3) Apply to PSUs (BHEL, NTPC, ONGC, GAIL, Power Grid, IOCL, HAL, BARC, BEL, AAI) when they announce GATE-based recruitment January–June; (4) Apply for MHRD stipend (₹12,400–14,000/month for M.Tech at IITs/NITs with GATE). Scorecard is valid 3 years — GATE 2026 scorecard valid until March 2029.

⚡ GATE 2026 Score Strategy – The M_q_max Effect

The single most important variable in the GATE score formula (besides your marks) is M_q_max — the topper's marks. If the paper is easy and the topper scores 97/100, a 65-mark performance gives: Score = 350 + 650 × (65−28)/(97−28) = 350 + 348 = 698. But if the paper is hard and the topper scores 85/100, the same 65 marks gives: Score = 350 + 650 × (65−28)/(85−28) = 350 + 422 = 772. This is why hard GATE papers can be advantageous for competitive scorers — lower topper marks compress the denominator and inflate everyone's score proportionally.

GATE Score Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions 2026

What is the GATE score formula 2026? How is GATE score calculated from marks?
The official GATE score formula is: S = 350 + 650 × (M – M_min) / (M_q_max – M_min) where S_max=1000, S_min=350, M=your normalized marks (0–100), M_min=mean marks of candidates below qualifying cutoff (approximately 25–35 depending on paper), and M_q_max=marks scored by the topper across all sessions (typically 85–98, announced with results). Example: Your marks=60, topper=93, M_min=28: GATE Score = 350 + 650 × (60–28)/(93–28) = 350 + 650 × 0.492 = 350 + 320 = 670. The score is rounded to the nearest integer. M_q_max is the single most variable input — a harder paper with a lower topper score inflates everyone's GATE score for the same raw marks.
What is a good GATE score in 2026 for IIT M.Tech?
GATE score benchmarks for 2026 (for large papers like ME, CS, ECE): 900+ (Exceptional): IIT Bombay/Delhi/Madras M.Tech in top programmes (top 0.5–1%); 800–899 (Excellent): All IIT Top-6 M.Tech competitive, excellent PSU chances (NTPC, Power Grid, GAIL); 700–799 (Very Good): All IITs including newer ones, all major PSUs; 600–699 (Good): Top NITs (NIT Trichy, Warangal), most PSUs (IOCL, HAL); 500–599 (Satisfactory): Mid-tier NITs, BHEL and select PSUs; 350–499 (Qualified): Qualifies but competitive options limited — lower NITs, private colleges. For smaller papers (CH, IN, PI, MN), the same score percentile corresponds to far fewer candidates — a 700 in CH is more competitive than 700 in ME. Use the College Predictor tab for personalized estimates.
How is GATE score different from GATE marks? Is GATE score out of 1000?
Yes — GATE score is on a 1000-point scale, while GATE marks are out of 100. They are entirely different numbers. GATE marks = raw performance (0–100, your actual answers). GATE score = the 1000-point value calculated from marks using IIT's formula. A score of 650 out of 1000 does NOT mean 65% — the relationship is non-linear and paper-specific. All qualified candidates get scores between 350–1000 regardless of marks; unqualified candidates (below cutoff marks) receive NO scorecard. When PSUs and IITs/NITs announce cutoffs, they always use the 1000-point GATE score, never raw marks percentage. Your GATE scorecard shows both your marks out of 100 AND your GATE score out of 1000.
How does GATE multi-session normalization work in 2026?
Large papers (ME, CS, ECE, CE, EE, IN) are conducted in multiple sessions with different candidate groups. To ensure fairness, IIT applies normalization: M̄ = M × (M̄_tg – M̄_qg) / (M̄_t – M̄_q) + M̄_qg where M̄_t = mean of top 0.1% in your session; M̄_tg = mean of top 0.1% globally; M̄_q = mean of all candidates in your session; M̄_qg = mean globally. If your session was harder (lower session mean M̄_q < global mean M̄_qg), your marks are normalized upward. If easier, slightly downward. IIT publishes these four parameters with final results — before that, you can only estimate. In our calculator, select "Multi-Session" and enter the published values for the most accurate score estimate.
What GATE score do I need for PSU recruitment in 2026?
PSU GATE score requirements vary by company, paper, and category. Based on historical 2024–25 data: Top PSUs (Power Grid EE, NTPC, GAIL, ONGC): GEN cutoff 700–800; OBC ~5% lower; SC/ST ~15–20% lower; Mid-tier PSUs (IOCL, HAL, BEL, AAI): GEN 600–700; BHEL: GEN 400–550 (lower, but has written test after screening); BARC: GEN 600–750 + interview. Key points: (1) PSU GATE cutoff is only the first screening — most PSUs have GD/interview/written tests afterward; (2) Each PSU specifies accepted GATE papers; (3) Apply to each PSU separately when they post notifications (January–June); (4) Use the PSU Check tab above with your score, paper, and category for personalized eligibility across 8 major PSUs.
For how many years is GATE 2026 score valid? Can I use it for multiple years?
GATE 2026 scorecard is valid for 3 years from the date of announcement of results — typically March 2026, making it valid until approximately March 2029. During this 3-year window you can: (1) Apply for M.Tech admissions at IITs/NITs in the 2026, 2027, and 2028 admission cycles; (2) Apply to PSUs whenever they announce GATE-based recruitment within this period; (3) Apply for international MS programmes accepting GATE scores; (4) Apply for government research recruitment (DRDO, ISRO, CSIR). Most candidates use GATE scores in the year they appear. However, the 3-year validity is valuable for students who work 1–2 years before pursuing M.Tech, or PSU aspirants waiting for their target company's notification. Always mention the GATE year when applying since different years have different score distributions.
Can I appear in two GATE 2026 papers?
Yes — from GATE 2021 onwards, candidates can appear in up to 2 GATE papers in the same year from approved combinations. You get 2 separate scorecards. Additional paper fee applies (~₹1,500–2,000 extra). Approved two-paper combinations include (among others): CS+MA, CS+ST, ECE+PI, ME+PI, EE+IN, CE+GE, CH+BT. You CANNOT choose arbitrary pairs — only IIT-approved combinations are allowed. Check the official GATE 2026 notification for the complete approved list. Strategy: choose your core paper plus one with significant syllabus overlap. Examples: ECE (primary) + IN (secondary — overlapping analog electronics, signals); ME (primary) + PI (secondary — overlapping manufacturing, thermodynamics). Two papers double your M.Tech options and PSU eligibility streams.
What is the GATE 2026 exam pattern? Questions, marks and duration?
GATE 2026 exam pattern: Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes) · Total Questions: 65 · Total Marks: 100 · Mode: CBT (Computer Based Test). Sections: General Aptitude (GA) = 10 questions, 15 marks (mandatory for all papers) + Technical/Subject = 55 questions, 85 marks. Question types: (1) MCQ — 1 or 2 marks; wrong = −1/3 or −2/3 (negative marking applies); (2) MSQ (Multiple Select) — 1 or 2 marks; no negative marking; (3) NAT (Numerical Answer) — 1 or 2 marks; no negative marking. Note: All questions must be attempted digitally — MCQs via radio button, NAT via virtual keyboard. XE and XL papers have a different structure with a compulsory Engineering Mathematics section plus one chosen section. Always download your admit card from the official GATE website well before exam date.
What is GATE percentile and how is AIR estimated from GATE score?
GATE percentile = percentage of appearing candidates who scored BELOW you. Formula: Percentile = [1 – (Rank / Total candidates)] × 100. AIR (All India Rank) = your position among all appeared candidates in that paper. Both appear on your official GATE scorecard. Estimation: for large papers like ME (~2.2L candidates), GATE Score 850 → approximately AIR 2,200 → Percentile 99.0%; Score 750 → AIR ~7,700 → Percentile 96.5%; Score 650 → AIR ~22,000 → Percentile 90.0%. For small papers like CH (~25,000 candidates), the same score 750 → AIR ~875 → Percentile 96.5%. Percentile is useful for understanding competitive standing. GATE score (1000-point) is used by PSUs and institutes for actual cutoffs. Use the Percentile tab in our calculator above for paper-specific estimates.
