BITS Pilani Grading System 2025–26 – Complete Grade Points Table

BITS Pilani uses a 10-point grading scale with letter grades assigned by faculty based on relative performance in the class. Here is the complete grade points table.

A
10.0 pts
≥ 90% typically · Outstanding
A−
9.0 pts
≥ 85% typically · Excellent
B
8.0 pts
≥ 75–84% · Very Good
C

≥ 50–59% · Below Average
E
5.0 pts
40–49% · Minimum Pass
F

Below 40% · Fail / NC
📌
Important: BITS Pilani uses relative grading — grade cutoffs are not fixed at 90%/85%/75% etc. The actual percentage cutoffs for each grade are determined by the course instructor based on class performance distribution. The percentages shown above are approximate typical ranges. Two students with the same absolute score in different sections may receive different grades. This is a key feature of BITS's grading system that makes cross-course and cross-year CGPA comparisons imprecise.

How BITS Pilani Calculates CGPA – Formula & Unit System Explained

📐 BITS SGPA / CGPA Formula

BITS Pilani uses a unit-weighted grade point average. Every course at BITS has a unit load (typically 3, 4, or 5 units for major courses; 1–2 units for electives and practical courses). The SGPA formula:

SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Units) ÷ Σ (Units)

  • Example: Mathematics (A, 4 units) = 10×4 = 40; Physics (B, 4 units) = 8×4 = 32; Chemistry (A−, 3 units) = 9×3 = 27; Electronics (C, 3 units) = 7×3 = 21; Workshop (A, 1 unit) = 10×1 = 10. Total quality points = 130. Total units = 15. SGPA = 130÷15 = 8.67
  • Cumulative CGPA: Σ (SGPA × Semester Units) ÷ Σ (All Units) — or equivalently, Σ (all quality points ever) ÷ Σ (all units ever)
  • F grade: 0 grade points, but the units still count in the denominator — a failing grade heavily drags down CGPA. A back (F in a 4-unit course) reduces CGPA dramatically
  • NC (Not Credited): Certain courses are NC (Activity courses, NSS, etc.) — these do NOT affect CGPA; grade points not computed for NC courses
  • Grade improvement (Special exam): BITS allows students to improve grades; the new grade replaces the old in CGPA calculation
  • SGPA scale: Maximum 10.0 (all A grades). Minimum passing SGPA: depends on accumulated grades — BITS requires maintaining CGPA above certain thresholds to avoid academic warning
1

Step 1: Know Your Course Units (Not Credits)

BITS Pilani uses "units" rather than "credits" — functionally identical to credit hours. Typical unit loads at BITS: Core engineering courses = 3–5 units (most are 3 units lecture + 1 unit tutorial = 4 units total, or 5 units with lab); Elective courses = 3 units; Practical/Lab courses = 1–3 units; Activity courses (sports, NSS, NCC) = 1 unit but NC (Not Credited — doesn't affect CGPA); Thesis/Dissertation = 3–9 units; Practice School (PS1) = 6 units; PS2 = 16 units. Your course registration document (Time Table form) shows units for each course. BITS academic regulations specify that students must register for 13–25 units per semester under normal circumstances.

2

Step 2: Map Letter Grade to Grade Points

BITS Pilani grade points are fixed: A = 10, A− = 9, B = 8, C = 7, D = 6, E = 5, F = 0. Unlike some universities, BITS does NOT use A+ (all A grades receive 10 points). The grading is relative — instructors assign grade cutoffs based on class performance. A student scoring 82% in a tough course where the class average was 60% may get an A, while a student scoring 85% in an easy course where most scored above 90% may get a C. This relative grading makes it difficult to predict grades in advance based on percentage alone. Tip: Focus on class rank, not absolute score.

3

Step 3: Calculate SGPA for Each Semester

Multiply grade points by units for each course, sum all the products (quality points), then divide by total units registered in that semester. Exclude NC (Not Credited) courses from the calculation. Example for a 5-course semester: Engineering Drawing (A, 3u) = 30; Mechanics (B, 4u) = 32; Chemistry (A−, 3u) = 27; Workshop (C, 1u) = 7; Math 2 (A, 4u) = 40. Total quality points = 136; total units = 15; SGPA = 136/15 = 9.07. Use the Sem SGPA tab above to add courses and calculate instantly — you can add up to 10 courses per semester.

4

Step 4: Calculate Cumulative CGPA

BITS Pilani's CGPA is the weighted average of all grade points across all semesters: CGPA = (Sum of all quality points across all semesters) ÷ (Sum of all units across all semesters). Equivalently: CGPA = (S1_SGPA × S1_units + S2_SGPA × S2_units + ...) ÷ (S1_units + S2_units + ...). Use the Cumulative CGPA tab above — enter each semester's SGPA and unit load. Important: Practice School (PS1 and PS2) grades ARE included in CGPA at most BITS departments, so performing well in industry internship is important for CGPA. Your CGPA appears on your official BITS transcript and grade sheet — available on the BITS ERP portal.

💡 BITS CGPA Strategy – Relative Grading Is Both Friend and Foe

BITS's relative grading means your grade depends on how you perform relative to your batch — not on fixed percentage thresholds. Strategy implications: (1) Avoid heavy course loads in tough semesters — taking 5 core courses when others take 4 exposes you to more relative grading risk; (2) Study groups are critical — if your peers score high, the grade distribution shifts upward and C becomes harder to avoid; (3) Elective choices matter for CGPA — some electives are known to be more generously graded than core courses; choose strategically; (4) First semester CGPA is disproportionately important — many companies screen on 6th/7th semester CGPA that is heavily influenced by the first 2–3 semesters. A bad first semester requires many excellent semesters to recover from.

BITS Pilani Placement CGPA Cutoffs 2025–26 – Top Companies

BITS CDC (Career Development Centre) facilitates campus placements. Companies screen BITSians primarily on CGPA, branch, and resume. Here are approximate CGPA cutoffs from historical placement data.

💼 BITS Placement CGPA Reality Check 2025–26

BITS Pilani's placement system is distinctive: companies set their own CGPA cutoffs for shortlisting, which range from 6.0 (CGPA floor for most companies) to 8.5+ for ultra-competitive firms. Key facts:

  • Most companies shortlist at 7.5+ CGPA: The majority of mass-recruiting tech companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant) accept CGPA 6.0–7.0, but product companies (Google, Microsoft, Adobe) typically screen at 7.5+.
  • Top consulting/finance firms shortlist at 8.0+ CGPA: McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, etc. use CGPA 8.0 or sometimes 8.5 as a filter for BITSians.
  • Government PSU recruitment via GATE: BITS graduates applying to PSUs (NTPC, GAIL, ONGC) must have 60–65% equivalent (CGPA ~6.0–6.5) plus competitive GATE score. CGPA ×10 for percentage conversion.
  • BITS CS/ECE branch premium: For the same CGPA, CS/ECE students at BITS get more opportunities than Mechanical/Civil because of tech company preference — but core companies (Tata Steel, L&T, Mahindra) actively recruit from Mechanical/Civil.
  • CGPA is not everything at BITS: BITS students are entrepreneurial; CDC places only a subset of students via campus. Many pursue startups, MS abroad, GATE, higher studies, or off-campus offers. Focus on building skills alongside maintaining CGPA.

BITS Pilani CGPA Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions 2025–26

How is CGPA calculated at BITS Pilani?
BITS Pilani CGPA is calculated using unit-weighted grade points: CGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Units for every course ever taken) ÷ Σ (All Units ever taken). Grade points at BITS: A=10, A−=9, B=8, C=7, D=6, E=5, F=0. NC (Not Credited) courses like Activity courses are excluded from CGPA calculation. Example: If you've completed 3 semesters with total quality points 1,260 and total units 148, CGPA = 1260/148 = 8.51. The semester SGPA uses the same formula but only for that semester's courses. BITS CGPA appears on your grade sheet after each semester on the ERP portal. Practice School (PS1 and PS2) grades are included in CGPA computation at most BITS departments — it's important to maintain high grades during industry internships. All BITS campuses (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, Dubai) use the identical grading system and CGPA formula.
What are the grade points for BITS Pilani grades? What is A, B, C grade at BITS?
BITS Pilani grade points on the 10-point scale: A = 10 grade points (highest; typically awarded to top 15–25% of class in most courses); A− = 9 grade points (next tier); B = 8 grade points; C = 7 grade points; D = 6 grade points; E = 5 grade points (minimum passing grade — just above fail); F = 0 grade points (fail; course must be repeated). Important nuance: BITS does NOT have A+ (there is no grade above A = 10). Also note that BITS grading is relative — the same absolute score (e.g., 80%) may earn a B in one course and an A in another depending on the class distribution. Grade cutoffs are set by instructors after the exam, not before. BITS does not publicly disclose the percentage cutoffs for each grade — they vary by course, instructor, semester, and campus. Getting an A at BITS often requires being among the top scorers in your section, not just scoring above a fixed threshold.
How do I convert BITS Pilani CGPA to percentage?
The standard formula used by BITS Pilani and accepted by most employers, graduate programs, and government agencies: Percentage = BITS CGPA × 10. Examples: 9.2 CGPA → 92%; 8.5 CGPA → 85%; 8.0 CGPA → 80%; 7.5 CGPA → 75%; 7.0 CGPA → 70%. This simple ×10 formula is the most commonly used and is often stated in official BITS documentation. Some sources use CGPA × 9.5 (like IIT formula), but BITS's own convention is ×10. For government PSU recruitment (GATE-based): 60% minimum required = BITS CGPA 6.0 minimum. For bank PO (IBPS): 60% minimum = BITS CGPA 6.0 minimum. For ISRO/DRDO: 65–70% minimum = BITS CGPA 6.5–7.0 minimum. When applying for government jobs, obtain an official CGPA conversion certificate from BITS Academic Section if needed — this states your CGPA and its official percentage equivalent per BITS norms.
How do I convert BITS CGPA to 4.0 GPA for US MS applications?
For US graduate school applications, the most accepted conversion from BITS Pilani's 10-point CGPA to 4.0 GPA: GPA(4.0) = BITS CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 (WES standard formula). Examples: BITS 9.0 → 3.60/4.0; BITS 8.5 → 3.40/4.0; BITS 8.0 → 3.20/4.0; BITS 7.5 → 3.00/4.0; BITS 7.0 → 2.80/4.0. WES (World Education Services) evaluation is often required by US universities for official grade conversion — WES converts Indian degrees and CGPA to US equivalents. A BITS CGPA of 8.0+ (3.2/4.0) is generally competitive for US top 25–50 engineering MS programs. BITS 8.5+ (3.4/4.0) is competitive for top 10 programs (MIT, Stanford, CMU). Many US universities directly accept the 10-point BITS scale on Common App or direct application forms — enter your CGPA as X.XX/10.0 when the application asks. Always cross-reference with each university's specific instruction on international GPA reporting.
What is a good CGPA at BITS Pilani for placements?
CGPA benchmarks for placements at BITS Pilani (CDC recruitment 2024–25): 9.0+ CGPA: Top 1–5% of batch; eligible for ultra-selective quant firms (DE Shaw, Jane Street), top consulting (McKinsey/BCG), all companies — highest priority shortlisting; 8.5–8.9 CGPA: Consulting (McKinsey/BCG), top finance (Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan), all product companies; 8.0–8.4 CGPA: Most product tech companies (Amazon, Adobe), finance, consulting shortlisting floor for many; 7.5–7.9 CGPA: Most good tech companies (Microsoft, Google sometimes), solid industry offers; 7.0–7.4 CGPA: Most standard tech companies, IT services, some good core companies; 6.5–6.9 CGPA: IT services (Infosys, TCS), some core companies — limited product company options; Below 6.5 CGPA: Limited campus placement options; consider government exams (GATE/UPSC), off-campus applications, or higher studies. Note: these are approximate thresholds — companies vary their cutoffs each year. Strong projects, competitive programming rankings, and internships can sometimes compensate for sub-7.5 CGPA at BITS.
Does the BITS Pilani campus (Pilani vs Goa vs Hyderabad) affect CGPA calculation?
No — all three Indian BITS campuses (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad) use the exact same CGPA calculation formula and grading system. All three are under the BITS Pilani Deemed University umbrella, which standardizes the A/A−/B/C/D/E/F grade points (10/9/8/7/6/5/0) and the unit-weighted SGPA/CGPA formula. The degree from all three campuses says "BITS Pilani" — there is no distinction between Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad on the degree certificate itself. However, there is an informal perception difference in industry: Pilani campus graduates are often perceived as slightly more prestigious than Goa or Hyderabad due to the 60-year legacy and slightly higher BITSAT cutoffs. For a given CGPA, a Pilani student may get marginally more placement opportunities than a Goa/Hyderabad student at some companies — but this gap is closing rapidly as Goa and Hyderabad campuses build strong alumni networks. BITS Dubai campus uses the same CGPA framework but its degree and recognition context is slightly different for international applications.
Can I improve my BITS CGPA if I have a bad semester? How does NC affect CGPA?
Yes — there are several ways to improve BITS CGPA: (1) Special supplementary exam (improve grade): BITS allows students to appear in special exams for courses where they scored D, E, or want to improve. A better grade from the special exam replaces the original grade in CGPA calculation — this is the most direct way to improve CGPA; (2) Grade improvement through re-registration: In some cases, students can re-register for a course and the new grade replaces the old one; (3) Strong performance in remaining semesters: Since CGPA is weighted by units, excellent performance in future high-unit courses significantly raises CGPA. Mathematical reality: if you have 100 quality points deficit from 20 units of poor performance, you need ~100 extra quality points over your next 60 units of courses — achievable with consistent A grades; (4) NC courses: NC (Not Credited) courses — like Activity courses (sports, NSS, NCC, Dance, Drama), Mushrooming courses, etc. — are graded but the grade does NOT count in CGPA. Getting an A or F in an NC course has zero effect on CGPA. So NC courses are a free performance opportunity — they count for credit hours toward degree but not for CGPA. Take NC courses without fear of GPA impact.
What is the minimum CGPA required at BITS Pilani to avoid academic probation?
BITS Pilani's academic regulations include minimum CGPA requirements for continued enrollment: General minimum CGPA: Students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 4.0 (approximately 40%) to remain in good academic standing. Below this, academic warning or probation may be issued. In practice: The academic probation threshold varies by programme — for most BE programmes, the minimum is around 4.5–5.0 CGPA; Semester-specific rules: Students must also maintain minimum SGPA in each semester; consecutive bad semesters can lead to extended probation; F grade policy: An F grade means the course must be re-taken. Students with multiple F grades may face backlog restrictions; Unit load restriction: Students on academic warning may be restricted to fewer units per semester (12–15 units instead of 18–22). The exact thresholds are specified in the current BITS Academic Regulations document — download from the BITS Pilani official website or Academic Section. Note: most students never face academic probation risk — the typical BITSian concern is a CGPA below 7.0, which limits placement options rather than academic continuation.
