CAT 2025 Marking Scheme & Key Rules

  • Total Questions: 66 (24+20+22) · Total Marks: 198 (72+60+66)
  • MCQ Marking: Correct = +3 marks · Wrong = −1 mark (negative marking) · Unattempted = 0
  • TITA (Type In The Answer): Correct = +3 marks · Wrong = 0 (NO negative marking) · Approximately 20–25% of questions are TITA
  • Duration: 120 minutes total (40 minutes per section) — cannot switch between sections during a section's time window
  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT) in 3 slots on the same day
  • Normalization: CAT uses equating to compare scores across slots — if your slot was harder, your scaled score is adjusted upward
  • Score report: Shows raw marks, scaled score, and percentile separately for each section and overall

How CAT Percentile Is Calculated – Normalization & Scaling Explained

📐 CAT Percentile Formula & Normalization Process

CAT percentile is NOT simply your marks divided by total marks × 100. The process is more nuanced:

  • Step 1 – Raw Score: Your raw marks = (Correct MCQs × 3) − (Wrong MCQs × 1) + (Correct TITAs × 3). TITA wrong attempts score 0, not negative.
  • Step 2 – Normalization (Equating): Since CAT is held in 3 slots with slightly different difficulty, IIM uses statistical methods (typically mean and standard deviation equating) to convert raw scores to a common scale. A harder slot gets upward normalization — your effective scaled score may be higher than your raw score if you appeared in a difficult slot.
  • Step 3 – Scaled Score: After normalization, scores are mapped to a continuous scale (approximately 0–198 overall). This scaled score is what appears on your CAT scorecard.
  • Step 4 – Percentile Calculation: Percentile = (Number of candidates who scored LESS than you / Total candidates) × 100. If 3,30,000 candidates appeared and 1,650 scored more than you in QA, your QA percentile = (3,28,350/3,30,000) × 100 = 99.5%ile.
  • Section percentile vs Overall: Each section (VARC, DILR, QA) has its own separate percentile. The overall percentile is based on your total scaled score — it is NOT the average of section percentiles.
  • All IIMs use section cut-offs: To qualify for IIM shortlisting, you must cross both the overall percentile threshold AND section-wise cut-offs (e.g., IIM-A requires minimum ~70th percentile in each section for GEN category).
1

Step 1: Calculate Your Raw Score in Each Section

For each section, count your correct and incorrect MCQ answers: Raw score = (Correct MCQs × 3) − (Incorrect MCQs × 1) + (Correct TITAs × 3). VARC example: 18 correct MCQs, 3 wrong MCQs, 2 correct TITAs = (18×3) − (3×1) + (2×3) = 54 − 3 + 6 = 57 raw marks. Remember: TITAs with wrong answers cost 0, not −1. Maximum possible: VARC 72, DILR 60, QA 66 (total 198). Enter these raw section marks in the Raw → Score tab above.

2

Step 2: Understand How Slot Normalization Works

CAT is held in 3 slots on the same day. If your slot had a harder DILR or QA, your raw marks are adjusted upward relative to other slots. IIM uses a mean-based equating method: candidates in a harder slot (with lower average scores) get upward adjustment to their scaled score; candidates in an easier slot (higher average) may see slight downward adjustment. This is why the calculator asks your slot — Slot 1 (morning) tends to be the baseline, while Slots 2 and 3 can vary. In our estimator, we apply a ±2–5 mark adjustment based on typical historical slot difficulty patterns. The actual normalization is proprietary to IIM and only revealed in the final scorecard.

3

Step 3: Map Scaled Score to Percentile

After normalization, IIM maps scores to percentiles based on the full candidate distribution. Historical CAT score-to-percentile mapping (approximate, varies year to year): Total scaled score 170+/198 ≈ 99.5%ile; 155–170 ≈ 99.0%ile; 140–155 ≈ 98.0–99.0%ile; 120–140 ≈ 95–98%ile; 100–120 ≈ 90–95%ile; 80–100 ≈ 80–90%ile; 60–80 ≈ 65–80%ile. These are approximations — actual cutoffs shift slightly each year based on exam difficulty and candidate pool. Use the Percentile tab above to estimate your overall and section percentiles from scaled scores.

4

Step 4: Check Section-wise Percentile for IIM Shortlisting

Even with a 99%ile overall, you can be rejected by all top IIMs if one section percentile is too low. Each IIM has separate section-wise cut-offs: IIM-A (Ahmedabad) requires approximately 70th percentile each in VARC, DILR, and QA for GEN category; IIM-B/C/L similarly have 80th+ percentile section-wise thresholds. You must check section percentiles carefully — a brilliant QA score cannot compensate for a failing VARC percentile. Use the Percentile tab to see all three section-wise percentile estimates simultaneously.

🎯 CAT 2025 Strategy – The Section Percentile Trap

The most common reason for IIM rejection despite good overall percentile: failing section-wise cut-offs. A student with 97%ile overall but only 60%ile in VARC is rejected by IIM-A (which needs 70%ile minimum in VARC). Strategy: don't sacrifice any section for another. If you're strong in QA, use extra time from QA to support VARC attempts. The minimum viable strategy: aim for at least 85th percentile in your weakest section and 95th+ in your strong sections. Section-wise percentile is an equalizer — it prevents specialists (pure engineers who are QA gods but verbal weaklings) from dominating IIM seats.

📌 CAT 2025–26 – 10 Critical Facts Every MBA Aspirant Must Know

Essential CAT knowledge for maximizing your percentile and IIM shortlisting chances:

  • 99%ile ≠ guaranteed IIM-ABC call: IIM-A requires 99.5+ in recent years. Even 99.0 may not get IIM-B/C calls for GEN males with engineering background — competition is that intense.
  • Section-wise cutoffs are the hidden killer: A student with 98 overall but 65th in VARC gets rejected by all top IIMs. Every section must cross the threshold — minimum ~70th percentile for top IIMs.
  • Non-engineer advantage: IIMs actively pursue diversity — Arts/Science graduates with 95%ile often get calls over Engineers with 97%ile. If you're a non-engineer with good CAT score, your chances are better than they appear.
  • Work experience bonus: IIM Lucknow, IIM Calcutta, SPJIMR give significant weight to work experience (2–5 years is sweet spot). Freshers compete with everyone; experienced candidates have smaller competition pools.
  • 10th/12th marks matter for IIM-A/B/C: Composite scores at top IIMs include 10th and 12th board marks — a 95%ile CAT candidate with 95%+ in 10th/12th may beat a 97%ile candidate with 85% boards.
  • TITA = No negative marking: Attempt ALL TITA (Type in the Answer) questions even if unsure. A wrong TITA costs 0. Never leave TITA blank — probability of partial marks or lucky guess is better than guaranteed 0.
  • 3 attempts allowed per year: You can take CAT once per year. Multiple years allowed — there's no lifetime attempt limit. Many successful IIM students took CAT 2–3 times.
  • CAT score valid for 1 year only: Unlike GATE (3 years), CAT 2025 score is only valid for 2026 batch admissions. You cannot use 2025 CAT for 2027 IIM applications.
  • Start WAT-PI prep before results: CAT results come in January; WAT-PI calls go out February–March; interviews are March–April. If you're expecting 95+ percentile, start WAT-PI and GD preparation in January itself.
  • FMS Delhi is arguably India's best value MBA — ~₹30,000 total fee for 2 years with placements rivaling IIM-C. The cutoff is 98+ overall with 85+%ile section-wise. Unique selection where CAT percentile alone matters (no composite score — pure merit).

CAT Percentile Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions 2025–26

How is CAT percentile calculated? What is the formula?
CAT percentile = (Number of candidates who scored LESS than you ÷ Total candidates who appeared) × 100. Example: 3,30,000 total candidates, you ranked 3,300 overall (3,26,700 scored less than you): Percentile = 3,26,700/3,30,000 × 100 = 99.0%ile. Important nuances: (1) CAT first normalizes raw marks across 3 slots using statistical equating before calculating percentile; (2) Section percentiles are calculated independently — VARC percentile = (candidates who scored less in VARC ÷ total) × 100; same for DILR and QA; (3) Overall percentile is based on total scaled score, NOT the average of three section percentiles; (4) Multiple candidates with identical scaled scores may get slightly different percentiles due to decimal rounding in IIM's methodology. The official percentile appears on your CAT 2025 scorecard released in January 2026 — our calculator provides estimates based on historical score-percentile data.
What CAT percentile is needed for IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta (ABC)?
Historical CAT percentile requirements for IIM shortlisting (WAT-PI calls) for General category: IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A): Overall 99.5+ AND minimum ~70%ile in each of VARC, DILR, QA; IIM Bangalore (IIM-B): Overall 99+ AND minimum ~85%ile each section; IIM Calcutta (IIM-C): Overall 99+ AND minimum ~85%ile each section. However, getting the WAT-PI call is just step 1 — final admission at IIM-ABC also heavily weights: (1) Academic consistency (10th, 12th, graduation scores); (2) Work experience and diversity; (3) WAT and PI performance; (4) Composite Admission Score (CAS). For GEN male engineers (the most competitive category), effective cutoff for IIM-A is often closer to 99.7–99.9 in practice, because the competition is fierce. Non-engineers and women at similar percentiles have better chances due to diversity bonus. For SC/ST candidates, sectional cutoffs are significantly relaxed (typically 50–60%ile instead of 70–85%ile), and overall cutoff drops to ~80–85%ile at ABC.
What are the CAT 2025 marks vs percentile? How many questions to get 99 percentile?
Approximate CAT score-to-percentile mapping (varies year to year based on difficulty): 99.5%ile: ~170–180/198 marks (scaled score); 99.0%ile: ~155–168 marks; 98.0%ile: ~140–154 marks; 97.0%ile: ~128–139 marks; 95.0%ile: ~115–127 marks; 90.0%ile: ~95–114 marks; 85.0%ile: ~80–94 marks; 80.0%ile: ~65–79 marks. To get 99%ile, you typically need ~50–54 correct answers out of 66 (assuming ~10 wrong and 2–3 unattempted). Section-wise approximate targets for 99%ile overall: VARC ~55/72 (scaled), DILR ~45/60, QA ~50/66. These are rough estimates — actual cutoffs vary each year by 5–10 marks depending on paper difficulty. A hard paper (as in 2021–22) can mean 99%ile at 50+ marks lower than an easy paper year.
Does CAT percentile have a negative marking? How does TITA scoring work?
CAT 2025 has two types of questions with different marking schemes: MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions): Correct = +3 marks; Wrong = −1 mark (negative marking applies); Unattempted = 0. Approximately 75–80% of CAT questions are MCQs. TITA (Type In The Answer): Correct = +3 marks; Wrong = 0 marks (NO negative marking); Unattempted = 0. Approximately 20–25% of CAT questions are TITA across all three sections. TITA strategy: Always attempt TITA questions even if you're not sure — the worst that happens is 0 marks (same as leaving blank), while a correct TITA gives +3. This is a significant advantage. For MCQs, the negative marking threshold: attempt only if you're more than ~25% confident about the answer (1/4 chance of being right = expected value exactly 0; better than random). In QA, many numerical-type questions are TITA — this is why many toppers focus extra time on QA TITA questions. VARC also has some VA (Para-jumbles, Out-of-paragraph) questions as TITA.
What is normalization in CAT? How does it affect my score?
CAT 2025 is held in 3 slots (morning, afternoon, evening) on the same day. Since different slots may have different difficulty levels, IIM uses normalization (equating) to ensure fairness. How it works: IIM uses statistical methods (typically based on mean and standard deviation of scores in each slot) to adjust raw scores to a common scale. If your slot (say, Slot 1) had a harder DILR than Slot 2, the average DILR score in Slot 1 will be lower. Normalization adjusts scores upward so that a Slot 1 candidate who scored the same raw marks as a Slot 2 candidate (who had easier DILR) gets a higher scaled DILR score. The exact normalization formula is not publicly disclosed by IIM — it's proprietary. In practice: (1) Your scaled score may be different from your raw score by ±5–15 marks depending on slot difficulty; (2) The direction (up or down) depends on whether your slot was harder or easier than average; (3) You will NOT know your slot's difficulty until you see everyone else's scores — making pre-result predictions inherently uncertain. Our calculator applies approximate historical slot adjustments. The actual scaled score is definitively revealed on the official CAT scorecard.
What is a good CAT percentile for IIM without ABC? Which IIMs can I get with 95–98 percentile?
For candidates with 95–98 overall percentile (GEN category), excellent MBA options exist: 95–96 percentile: IIM Kozhikode (shortlist likely), IIM Indore (likely), IIM Shillong (likely), MDI Gurgaon (possible), NITIE Mumbai (possible), SPJIMR Mumbai (borderline); 96–97 percentile: IIM Lucknow (shortlist likely), SPJIMR Mumbai (likely), MDI Gurgaon (likely), FMS Delhi (borderline); 97–98 percentile: IIM Lucknow (strong), SPJIMR (strong), FMS Delhi (shortlist possible), IIM-ABC (only with exceptional academics/diversity). Remember: these are for GEN male engineers — the hardest category. If you're a non-engineer, woman, or OBC/SC/ST, the same percentile gives access to higher-ranked institutions. Also note that section percentiles must be cleared — 97 overall with 60%ile VARC still misses most IIM shortlists. Total quality of application (10th/12th marks, work experience, diversity) ultimately determines WAT-PI calls at each percentile band.
Is there a sectional time limit in CAT 2025? Can I go back to previous sections?
Yes — CAT 2025 has strict section-wise time limits: VARC: 40 minutes; DILR: 40 minutes; QA: 40 minutes. Total: 120 minutes. You CANNOT move to the next section before the 40-minute timer ends, and you CANNOT go back to a previous section once its time is over. Within a section, you can freely move between questions — skip difficult ones and return. Critical strategy implications: (1) Never get stuck on a single hard question within a section; (2) Monitor time within section — ideally finish 2 minutes early to review marked questions; (3) The DILR section typically causes most time management issues — set 25 minutes for 2 sets and 15 for the remaining; (4) QA: allocate time based on question type — Geometry/P&C tend to be time-consuming; Arithmetic and Algebra are usually faster. The strict section-wise timer is different from most other exams — practice full-length mocks with section-specific timers to build muscle memory.
How many attempts are allowed for CAT? Is there an age limit for CAT?
CAT attempt limits and age requirements: Number of attempts: No official lifetime limit on CAT attempts. You can appear in CAT every year as many times as you want. Most successful IIM students either get in on their first or second attempt — but some take 3–4 attempts. Score validity: CAT 2025 score is valid for ONLY ONE YEAR (2026 batch admissions). You cannot use your 2025 CAT score for 2027 batch IIM admissions — you must reappear. Age limit: No maximum age limit for CAT — anyone with a bachelor's degree (or final-year student) can appear. Minimum qualification: Bachelor's degree (any discipline) with minimum 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD) from a recognized university OR final-year students. Work experience: No minimum work experience required — freshers are eligible. However, some IIMs (especially for executive programs) require work experience for specific programmes. Practical age reality: While there's no official age limit, IIM selection processes (especially WAT-PI) do consider career trajectory — candidates above 30 years without significant work experience may face harder interview questions about the decision to pursue an MBA.
What is FMS Delhi and why is it called the best value MBA in India?
FMS (Faculty of Management Studies) Delhi is part of Delhi University and widely regarded as India's best value MBA for multiple reasons: Fees: Approximately ₹25,000–30,000 for the entire 2-year program (vs ₹20–30 lakhs at IIM-ABC) — essentially free government-subsidized MBA; Placements: Average salary of ₹25–30 LPA with top companies including McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, Amazon — comparable to IIM-L/K/I and some years competitive with IIM-C; CAT cutoff: 98+ overall percentile for GEN (85%ile sectional) — nearly as hard as IIM-C; Selection: FMS is unique in using PURE CAT MERIT (no composite score, no academic weightage, no diversity bonus) — if your percentile qualifies, you get a WAT-PI call purely on merit; ROI: FMS MBA ROI (Return on Investment) is the highest in India — 2-year fee of ₹30,000 with CTC of ₹25+ LPA = payback in weeks; Delhi advantage: Delhi location gives access to NCR industry network, alumni connections, and internship opportunities; Batch diversity: Strong representation across disciplines (engineers + non-engineers + working professionals). The downside: smaller batch (~210 seats), less alumni network than IIMs, lower brand recognition internationally. For domestic careers, FMS is an exceptional choice for anyone near the 98%ile range.
